Red Spots & Vermiculations...

Welcome to WV's information resource concerning our state fish, the native brook trout. The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) became WV's official state fish in 1973. It is the only native trout to WV and is considered the greatest indicator species of watershed health in our higher elevations. Today, WV's populations of brook trout face many manmade problems that have greatly impacted many of our streams. We sincerely hope that you will spend some time on this and other websites discovering this remarkable fish, the problems that face it and what you can do to help.

The brookie thanks you!

Enjoy the original WV Back The Brookie Video that uses images and music to convey the message. (Note: Brookie enthusiasts at Glenville State College helped record the music you hear. Way to go GSC!)

The following is an excerpt from Vandalia Angler II (not yet released) concerning brook trout conservation.
