History
Establishing An Advocate For Trout   large product photo

The Kanawha Valley Chapter of TU was established in 1972. That first year, there were 15 members led by President Ernie Nester. Mr. Nester and several of those charter members are still an integral part of TU leadership. At that time, there were very few quality trout fisheries within reasonable driving distance of the Kanawha Valley. One of the orginal goals of KVCTU was to find a way to bring quality wild trout fishing closer to home.

Developing a Legacy   large product photo

Early projects within KVCTU helped build a foundation for what is now a widely recognized and respected organization. Extensive surveying and advocacy for Middle Fork of Williams River, access issues, construction of splash dams, extensive water chemistry testing throughout WV, and other habitat structures and developing membership are a few of the initial projects undertaken by KVCTU's membership. The first fingerling stocking by TU in WV was performed by KVCTU in 1977 on Hominy Creek. In 2007 KVCTU stocked its one millionth fingerling trout.

The Modern Era   large product photo

Today, KVCTU is involved in an extremely wide array of projects relating to the TU mission statement. We assist with manpower and funding for DNR limestone sand treatments to native brook trout watersheds affected by acidification, extensive fingerling brown trout stockings to supplement wild trout populations, create new populations and create quazi-wild brown trout fisheries, habitat projects, youth & adult education activities, litter clean ups, Save Our Stream Surveys, public access grassroots activity and coldwater advocacy for sound legislative policy.
